WOW Driver Training

Learning to drive can be a very stressful experience for both the student and the personal supervisor teaching them.

There is so much to learn all at once. Initially, every action is a conscious thought:

  • Which pedal is the brake?

  • What foot do I use?

  • How fast should I be going?

  • What are those other cars doing?

  • How hard do I push on the pedals?

  • Who am I supposed to give way to?

  • So many decisions have to be made immediately

We developed the WOW Driver Training Program to make learning to drive a calm and safe experience that will get you quickly and confidently driving!

Our Driver Training Program timeline is a suggested guide only based on our general experience – each student will require different levels of support. Once we believe a student has reached a level of competency we will move onto the next stage – this may be several stages within 1 lesson or several lessons for 1 stage depending on requirements.

High-Intensity Skills Development phase

When first learning to drive you are often thrown in the deep end, having to learn almost every driving skill, all at once!

What seems like a good idea for a new student to drive to the local shops or a quick family outing can expose the student to a whole variety of high risk and complex driving environments that they simply aren’t able to process all at once, stressing out the student… and the person teaching them!

The WOW Driver Training Program takes the student progressively through a comprehensive range of essential skills, knowledge and complexity, in a safe low-risk environment, transitioning through each stage as skills and confidence develop.

WOW Driver Trainers utilise a number of techniques, training aids, quick impact theory snapshots, and a variety of traffic situations to develop these essential skills quickly, through practical driving sessions in a safe  controlled environment.

Throughout the program, the student transfers knowledge of each skill from conscious thought into procedural memory, developing the ability to perform driving tasks from subconscious actions (like remembering how to ride a bike). Through high-intensity repetition, the number of these small subconscious actions quickly build and enable us to expand new skills while reinforcing those already developing into procedural memory.

Statistics confirm that Learner Drivers are the safest of any road user during the 100+hrs they are being supervised, this is improved further in a Dual Control vehicle with an Accredited Driver Trainer. We aim to take advantage of these facts, and our experience, to fast track the student’s development of these Essential Skills through a High-Intensity phase, as early as possible in their learning journey, therefore enabling them to be better equipped to drive with a personal supervisor in their private vehicle.

We believe this process is the most effective and safest way to prepare a new student for engaging in regular driving with a personal supervisor. However, students with any level of experience can enter the program at any stage. We are able to assess skills that require attention and customise the program to suit.

Once our WOW Driver Trainers have established these Essential Skills it is important the student then engages in regular driving sessions with a personal supervisor to continue reinforcing and developing these skills.

We suggest another Driver Trainer session around 50hours to review progress and implement any corrective actions if they are required.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

An important aspect of learning to drive is repetition. You need to develop all the skills you are learning and become confident in your abilities. The only way to do this is to get out and practice.

In most cases this is done in a family vehicle with a parent, caregiver or trusted friend as your personal supervisor.

In addition to our  focus on training you with the correct techniques and skills to practice, we also provide your supervisor a guide with some tips and techniques to help you both stay safe and get the most from your hours practicing together.

Remember; we are always available for review lessons should you need any assistance while building up your hours.

 Responsible Road User phase

Once students are around 20-30hrs from their P-Test, our Driver Trainer Program focuses on the transition from supervised driving to taking responsibility for their own decisions on the road.

No more hand holding!

We apply our structured approach to assess the student’s ability to take full control of the vehicle without instruction.

Guidance is provided only as required… all while being in a position to intervene with Dual Controls as a risk control measure if necessary.

This phase of learning can be the most difficult and highest risk for personal supervisors in private vehicles.

It is essential learner’s transition to “safe, full control” driving before going for their Test.

This is something the Driver Examiner will be assessing. But, even more importantly:

Young learner drivers risk of a casualty incident increases

6x the moment they get their P’s!

Our aim is to develop safe competent drivers for life!

During the Responsible Road User phase of the WOW Driver Training Program our Driver Trainers focus on developing rapid Hazard Identification and Risk Control techniques.

We introduce Students to high-density traffic environments with high-risk vehicular, pedestrian and cyclist hazards. Our Driver Trainers coach the students in Scanning and Observation skills.

Then, once they are nearly ready for their test…

We run through all the Test manoeuvres, ensuring they have the correct techniques to practice.

Students are taken through some of the more challenging areas of the common Test routes that can be part of their driving tests in Mock Tests to help them prepare for the big event!
